Men are Lonely
“The eternal quest of the human being is to shatter his loneliness.”
Norman Cousins
Men become more alone throughout their working lives. Focusing on work, they tend to neglect their old friendships or restrict them to the work arena. Yet when they stop working, these friendships mostly disappear, and men are left profoundly alone. Loneliness is huge in this older age group.
There is an answer. The answer is turning back to masculine community. Within a community of men, we can turn inwards and together discover who we are, while creating meaningful friendships and love as we do our inner work. Here, we can let go of our solitary ways and our lonely individualism, and instead undertake a deep and meaningful inner journey with other men.
“At the innermost core of all loneliness
Is a deep and powerful yearning
For union with one’s lost self.”
Beendan Behan
On this journey, together we get to know and recover ourselves, and find deep meaning in who we are. Undertaking this journey in the company of other men brings trusting friendship, as we realise we are all essentially the same beneath the surface. Together, we build a deeper, far more loving kind of masculinity. Here, each man gathers around himself a group of male friends with whom he can celebrate life and walk this final path together.
As we proceed on the Sovereign’s Journey, we come to know each other in ways far deeper than are found in ordinary life. Together, we walk the path of the soul and tend to our rebirth and renewal, diving ever more deeply into ourselves. Together, we find the wellspring of our original life—neglected, but still alive within. Together, we bring our depths, our creativity, our original aliveness, and our loving, tender hearts back to life.
"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world.
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before.
Let your soul take you where you long to be.
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar,
and you’ll live as you’ve never lived before."
Erich Fromm
This brotherhood is incredibly nurturing and offers us a new life—one that can replace our old working life. Within the Sovereign’s Journey, we develop profound love for each other and for ourselves, as well as friendship and belonging for the later stages of our lives.
